FRIGHT THRICE ON ICE

Johnny Weir, who is in second place after the Men's Figure Skating short program, has described himself as "princessy," and has said, "that's the way we are." (Who is "we?") He also detailed a shopping trip to Milan in which he bought three pairs of Louis Vuitton shoes, and various other objets' de art. He keeps talking about what a "diva" he is and about how the figure skating establishment should be "afraid" of him. He has described his costumes with rather fanciful terms, calling one "an icicle on Coke."

Such behavior, I guess, is part of the primordial weirdness of the Olympics. Some of the men call themselves kings and princes (some of the women look like kings and princes - of countries that have been carpet-bombed). Women have to be sex-tested to make sure they are really women (apparently, Princess Anne was not tested in the 1976 Montreal Summer Games because everyone knew she was a man already). Men and women are tested for increased testosterone and estrogen levels.

Good grief! With all of the controversy surrounding figure skating already, some might take Mr. Weir's comment as evidence that he really belongs in the ladies' program, and therefore does not deserve a medal in the men's program (as do the other "we's"). Just what we need.... princesses v. ice queens - and someone - pity that person - has to look up the skirt to figure out which is which.
