HOW 'BOUT THOSE METS?

The New York Mets have the best record in baseball. The team is 11 games above .500, with a record of 20-9 (the Chicago White Sox have the same record).

Tonight's Mets victory was particularly satisfying. The Mets defeated the Braves, 8-7, in 14 innings (it just so happened that I turned on the TV just in time to see the game-winning single). The Mets have played so well this year that they even have the better of Atlanta in head-to-head play.

What thrills me no end is the prospect of the Braves' so-called dominance of MLB soon coming to an end. As we all know, the Braves have had the best NL East record for every season dating back to 1991 (1994 was the strike year, in which there was no post-season). 14 seasons of dominance. However, the Braves have only made it to the World Series in five of those seasons: 1991, 1992 1995, 1996, 1999. And they only won one of those World Series, in 1995. The Braves have lost the NL Division Series for the past four years.

Yes, the 14-season streak is something to marvel at. The one World Series win is impressive too, if you know what I mean.

The Braves are now 8 games behind the Mets. If things somehow stay the way they are, the Braves', shall we say, peculiar instutition, will not be something they need to worry about varnishing this year.
